This paperreports the results of an exploratory study of student experiences and perspectives with regard to learning in a graduate-level computer conferencing environment. Surveys, interviews and a modified focus group were used to provide insight into the use of collaborative computer conferencing for the development of higher-order thinking. The findings revealed that collaborative learning can take place within the computer conferencing medium if the course is structured to facilitate this form of interaction. Of further interest is that face-to-face interaction is important and that course deliver)! which concentrates on content transmission, needs to be addressed if higher-order learning is to be achieved. Finally, the role of the instructor was found to be crucial in course delivery in that he/she needs to be proactive to facilitate critical analysis. The article also presents suggestions for improving the design and implementation of computer conferencing courses.
