Student Attrition in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University
Abstract
Attrition has been widely accepted as one of the major hindrances to realize the full potential of Open Distance Learning (ODL). Several studies have been carried out on factors leading to attrition. The findings of such studies associate occurrence of attrition to factors like age, gender, home background, family size, economic status and students’ interest, among others. Some of the research efforts do not take into consideration the flexible nature of distance learning that allows students to stay on their programmes longer than their counterparts in conventional university if they so wish. This is a case study of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) covering a period of nine years from the students’ point of entry to the point of their exit. The study reveals that there is no difference in the attrition rate across the academic programmes of B.A, B.Com. and B.Sc. It is also found that the percentage of attrition of male students is higher than that of the female students.
