K. Gangappa, E. Chandraiah

Abstract

Abstract:

The open and distance education system enables open and distance education institutions to expand their higher education capability effectively, efficiently and quickly through modern communicat~on technologies. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) in lndia has been providing educational instruction through print and audio-visual technology. The researchers, in this study found that TV lessons and teleconferencing programmes were more useful as compared to audio, radio and video lessons. The television interactive programmes were likely to replace the face-to-face classroom teaching as the interactivity between sublecf expert and learner was live and more interesting. Recognising the importance of the new technology in open education system, BRAOU has been taking initiative to establish its own Earth Station in the premises of the University to uplink to INSAT-3B KU-Band Transponder. Once the Earth Station is established, the University will have its own educational channel to telecast ~nteractive programmes and contact-cum-counselling sessions may be reduced in a phased manner as the interactive television would bring the classroom reality to learners at home.
