Towards a Networked Learning Community: Using ICTs to Enhance Learning Support

Anne Gaskell, Kathleen Gilmartin, Patrick Kelly

Abstract

Abstract:

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in learner support services in distance education, and in this case, the Open University (UK). This paper reviews the development in recent years of ICTs to provide information, advice, resources and services for very large numbers of students and their tutors as part of a model of blended learning. It also considers the shift from mass produced generic resources to tailored, personalised support and communications and sets this in the context of the globalisation of the economy and the changing expectations of students as 'consumers'. ICT enabled learner support has real potential to bridge gaps between students and the institution and to build a collaborative networked academic community.
