Abstract:

The lndira Gandhi National Open University has recently embarked on a major initiative towards developing virtual learning environment for distance learners through eGyanKosh. eGyanKosh is an effort towards developing a national digital repository of learning resources. In the first phase, IGNOU course materials are being digitized for uploading on the repository. This will be followed by incorporation of course contents of other Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions in India. The repository with its integrated learning management system envisages providing total solution for online learning. The information architecture has been built keeping in view the global trends. The paper presents the status of learning object repositories the world over and gives an insight into the national digital repository being developed by the lndira Gandhi National Open University, and embarks upon further suggestions to expand this strategy.
