Adoption of New Technologies - An Intervention in the Development of ODL in Botswana
Abstract
Abstract:
Emerging trends in the development of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) necessitated the use of different technologies. The use of technologies is dictated by different factors which are associated with geographical conditions, economics of the said technologies, readiness of the consumers and finally the mind set of the policy makers. Although new technologies are seen as complementary to enhance learning, the process has also experienced setbacks in the use of technologies and thereby witnessed a heavy dependence on print materials and other 2dh century methods of ODL delivery. Learning through new technologies is an experience which is seen as a link between the tutor and learner in the process. For this work, the necessary data were collected from different institutions which are offering ODL programmes at different levels. A brief interaction was also made with tutors, students and administrators to know the difficulties in teaching and learning through these technologies.
The paper focuses to analyse the following issues:
- Development of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Botswana
- The programmes and the institutions involved in ODL
- Available new technologies for ODL and the extent of usage
- Experiences of tutors, students and Administrators in using new technologies
- A way forward for increased frequency in the use of these technologies.
