Abstract

This article reports the usage of computer applications between the genders among distance learners of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at home and workprace. The computer applications studied were the networking-based applications and the stand-alone applications. The networking-based applications studied include the e-mail, Internet browser and IRC chat applications while the computer stand-alone applications were word processing, CD-ROM and entertainment applications. The findings reveal that there are no significant differences between the genders in the usage of all the computer applications studied both at home and at workplace. This indicates that USM female distance learners participate equally with their male counterparts in the utilisation of networking-based and stand-alone computer applications to support their study needs in distance education. Word processing is found to be the most widely used application, while applications associated with educational purposes such as for communication and for information retrieval to supplement course materials, are only moderately used by both genders.
