Adopting New Learning Technologies in Distance Education

J.S. Mirza

Abstract

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), the only distance education thereof to be developed on Internet, turn heretofore largely paper-based library into virtual electronic libraries, which is touted to be one of the would-be biggest digital library in Asia, and afford students lnternet facility to make queries and retrieve in for ma tion on study courses. Unfortunately the most important ingredient of distance education in Hong Kong, which is massive provision of face to face (F2F) tutorial support for every course, is receiving very little attention to be put online as part and parcel of the lnternet course.

There are definite benefits accruing from the use of online technology in library domain and information retrieval; but provision of online distance education will not bear much fruit compared to its current mode, which is print medium with face-to-face tutorial support unless full-fledged tutorial support which is an integral part of distance education in Hong Kong also goes online.
