The idea of scaling up of the PG Diploma in Food Safety and Quality Management (PGDFSQM) programme to Master’s Programme in Food Safety and Quality Management at IGNOU was based on the positive and encouraging response received for the PGDFSQM programme since its launch in 2009 by IGNOU. The present study was conducted to assess and validate the need for a Master’s Programme in Food Safety and Quality Management through ODL mode to cater to the needs of the food industry after developing a basic framework in a brainstorming session involving all the stakeholders. The study was undertaken through an online survey with the help of a questionnaire and data were collected from 68 respondents. An online focus group discussion meeting was also organized to validate the need which was attended by 70 participants. The group comprised of subject experts, academicians, industry professionals, regulators, and students including the pass-outs. The key questions asked were on the need, nature, and scope of the programme, job prospects, entry level qualifications, programme duration, and the broad areas to be covered in the syllabus. The results revealed that majority (94%) of the respondents felt the need for a Master’s level programme in Food Safety and Quality Management. They also opined that the demand for food safety professionals is growing, and job prospects are increasing for the post-graduate qualified food safety professional in the food industry. The suggested course content included food science, food microbiology, food processing, and quality control. In light of the findings of this study, it is recommended to develop a twoyear Master’s in Food Safety and Quality Management programme through open and distance learning mode.
