Journalism and Mass Communication in Open and Distance Learning – A Needs Assessment Study in India

Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India Abstract: The broad objective of this study was to assess the need for a programme on MA in Journalism and Mass Communication in open and distance learning (ODL) mode. The study was undertaken following review of media education scenario in India, discussions with teachers and experts, and survey data from 108 respondents. The key survey questions were on: need, nature and scope of the programme; broad areas that need to be included in the syllabus; fee; medium of instruction, and interest of the students to join the programme. The results revealed that majority of respondents felt the need for a Master’s degree academic ODL programme in Journalism and Mass Communication with an exit option for PG Diploma after completing one year. Majority of respondents suggested to develop a professional programme in both English and Hindi mediums. The suggested course content includes: journalism, print media, television, new media, advertising and public relations, development journalism, media ethics and
communication theories with a judicious blend of theory and practical components. In the light of the findings of this study, it is recommended to develop an ODL MA programme in Journalism and Mass Communication to meet the needs of all the stakeholders.
