The traditional on-campus higher education system, which offers specialized programmes, has been facing many challenges, viz. inadequate funding, rising education costs, a shortage of faculty and facilities, and insufficient capacity to educate youth in various expanding niche disciplines. Additionally, there are time constraints and a lack of continuing education opportunities.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as a teaching methodology can address these challenges. It can increase the capacity of current facilities and faculty, provide greater flexibility, and provide high-quality, technology-enabled learning experiences. It enables students to acquire knowledge and skills more economically. The ODL provides flexible opportunities for continuing education to in-service learners in specialized niche programmes, while maintaining their employment, making education accessible to all by freeing learners from the constraints of space and time.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in India offers several niche educational programmes through ODL. These
programmes align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which highlights leveraging technology, expanding access
to quality multi-disciplinary education for learners, and creating a more inclusive learning environment for all students.
The Schools of Extension and Development Studies, Gender and Development Studies, Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary
Studies, and Performing and Visual Arts at IGNOU are providing a diverse array of 51 specialized multidisciplinary niche programmes within the framework of ODL. Over the span of a decade, from 2015 to 2025, these innovative programmes have enrolled a remarkable total of 1,00,749 students, reflecting a significant interest in these niche fields of study.
This paper aims to explore the rationale behind the creation of these specialized ODL programmes, detailing their developmental process and methods used for their innovative delivery, while highlighting their importance in meeting the evolving educational needs of a diverse student population.
