Abstract

The objective of the need assessment study was to assess the need for postgraduate programme in ethics through the open distance learning (ODL) mode. Review was conducted to find out the ethics courses offered by various universities and IGNOU though regular, online or distance education, level of the programme/course, it’s syllabus and the mode of delivery. Various policy documents like National Education Policy 2020, UGC documents on ethics and research studies related to ethics programme were reviewed and discussion were held with experts and faculty. A need assessment questionnaire was designed to collect information regarding background and profile of the respondents. Feedback was also taken with respect to the need and interest of the participants to join ethics programme. Most of the participants were in the category of 25-29 years of age and majority were post graduates. 75.6% of the respondents felt that knowledge and skills were required in their workplace. 47% respondents felt that the duration of the programme should be of two years, and 78% felt that it should be offered through open and distance education mode. Majority of them had not undergone any training in ethics. Based on the findings, it is recommended to design and develop post graduate programme in ethics for multi-disciplinary group. It will help to meet the needs of the respondents working in private and government sector to update their knowledge and skills on ethics and help in capacity building.
