Abstract

We expect increased demand for geospatial skilled workforce in emerging markets like India. We expect future generations to be more conscious of data standards and accuracy issues, as demand for spatial data grows. Higher education expansion is driven by the need for skilled workforce. Open and Distance Learning (ODL) education system could impart education to vast majority of people as compared to conventional higher education system. Mega institutions in India, like Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), are well-positioned to deliver educational programmes including in geoinformatics due to their geographic reach and flexibility. A nationwide web-based survey was undertaken, collecting input from 552 experts and potential learners. The key poll questions centred on the need for an ODL-based Master’s degree in geoinformatics. For better job prospects and a broader target audience, respondents suggested training in specialised and emerging application areas. Based on the conclusions of this study and discussions with connected expert groups, it is recommended that a Master’s Program in geoinformatics be developed in ODL mode.
