सार
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have touched every aspect of our life and the education sector is equally impacted. The manner of knowledge acquisition and engagement with content using ICT, especially by the university student, has undergone a tremendous change. The 21st century learner is self-directed and engages with content using multiple modes to gain knowledge, acquire skills and competences in the chosen domain of learning. Nouri, J, (2018), opines that in addition to the traditional text format, knowledge is transmitted in several different modes such as audio, video or mixed modes. Thus, ICT integration has reshaped the higher education landscape and has highlighted the importance of digital literacy. In the context of higher education, the emphasis is now on how university students design their own learning using different modes and media as per their needs. (Nouri, J, 2018)
The book, “Self-directed multimodal learning in higher education" is themed around the theory and practice of self-directed multimodal learning in the context of higher education. The concept of multimodal learning is addressed in terms of the various levels of multimodal and blended learning in a mixed mode approach within higher education. The chapters are based on empirical research studies primarily focusing on the synergistic functioning of self-directed and multimodal learning. Different research methodologies have been employed to explore the theme of the book, ranging from a critical review of research literature, design-based research, qualitative and quantitative methods, using various research tools.
