सार

This study examined the reach and relevance of Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) distance education Diploma programme in Early Childhood Care and Education. The study was conducted in two strands. Strand A was quantitative wherein learning analytics was carried out to determine enrolment profile, learner profile and programme completion profile. Strand B was an exploratory inquiry using mixed-methods sequential explonatory design to identify learners’ motivations for enrolment and perceived benefits. The findings point to a nationwide acceptance of the programme for developing pertinent knowledge and skills. The benefits in terms of professional career and knowledge and skills enhancement as well as the challenges faced by the learners due to lack of recognition of Open and Distance Learning, by the accrediting authority, as a legitimate modality for professional development in early childhood care and education are discussed. The chief implication of this study is for establishing norms and guidelines for accreditation of ODL programmes in the sector of early childhood care and education.
